What are the Pros and Cons of Argon-Filled Windows?

Most modern energy-efficient windows have argon-filled glass panes. Knowing about the pros and cons of this common feature can help you make a better purchase. Renewal By Andersen® of Sacramento, a top residential window contractor in the state, list them below.

Why Argon?

Manufacturers prefer to use argon because it’s cheap, non-toxic, colorless and odorless. As such, you shouldn’t worry if there’s a leak in your window. However, argon’s energy-efficiency is the main reason why it’s preferred by manufacturers.

Energy-Efficiency

Manufacturers fill the space between a window’s glass panes to improve its U-value, which indicates a window’s ability to block the transfer of heat. This, in turn, helps lower your cooling costs. Combined with low-E coatings that reflect heat, argon-filled glass units can greatly enhance a window’s energy efficiency.

The Drawbacks

Like all energy-efficient features, however, argon has its disadvantages. One significant drawback is the window’s lifespan. Glass expands when it’s exposed to heat, but argon doesn’t. Repeated contractions and expansions can damage the window sealing and shorten the window’s lifespan.

Argon or Krypton?

If you’re looking for the most energy-efficient window, you might want to choose krypton-filled windows. Krypton is also colorless, odorless and non-toxic but is more energy-efficient. Krypton-filled windows have lower U-values or better insulating capabilities. However, krypton is a lot more expensive.

More Than the Sum of Its Parts

Keep in mind that argon-filled glass alone can’t make a window energy-efficient. When looking for an energy-efficient window replacement, you should look at the window’s total performance instead.

Renewal by Andersen’s energy-efficient specialty windows have an insulated glass unit filled with an argon gas blend. Since we customize all our windows according to our customers’ needs, you’ll have the option to add other energy-efficient features, like our SmartSun™ glass and Fibrex® frames.
